What Is A Mentor?

In Homer's Odyssey, Mentor was the counselor and elder friend of Ulysses. When Ulysses set forth for Troy, he asked the loyal Mentor to manage his household and serve as the tutor of his only son, Telemachus. When the goddess Athena appeared to Ulysses, she often took the form of Mentor. From these classic roots, the term "mentor" has come to mean a trustworthy counselor, teacher or role model.

Did you have a mentor? What did you learn? Mentors often agree to work with younger business owners because someone once helped them and they want to return the favor, and many find it energizing. Others just want to help out, be a positive influence, or give something to their community. Whatever your reason for being a mentor, you will find it a special experience. Nothing can quite match the satisfaction you get from sharing your experience and helping another person succeed.

As a mentor for the Ben Appelbaum Foundation, you will help your mentee develop a strategic plan, create benchmarks for follow-up, and get help from the larger BAF network for specific goals or projects that your mentee is working toward.

BAF provides a support network for you as well, drawing upon our database of experts who have agreed to offer their time, knowledge and services, often pro bono or at a reduced rate for our mentees.
